I work as a DPhil Biologist at the University of Oxford. Originally from North Wales, I moved to Oxford in 2021 when I was offered my PhD scholarship. My research is funded by a Department of Biology European Research Council (ERC) grant and New College Yeotown.
Following a lifelong love of insect diversity, I use comparative phylogenetic techniques to understand why some insect species evolved extreme forms of social complexity while others did not. This information has implications for the evolution of complex life more broadly, such as the transition from single-celled life to multicellularity.
Alongside my research, I deliver tutorials on evolutionary biology and teach wildlife field identification skills. I am also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, committed to developing the best techniques for inspiring and teaching the next generation of biologists.
